|All winter the flower petals were wrapped snug and
warm in their little brown coats. They clung to the twigs
of the apple trees in the orchard. The wind rocked them.
|When Spring came the warm showers and bright
sunshine wakened the petals. They began to stretch
and grow. They grew too big for their brown coats.
A seam burst here, a seam burst there, and soon little
pink buds glowed on the trees. They stretched until
they became beautiful pink and white apple blossoms.
The whole orchard was pink and white, and very fragrant.
|The petals were happy because a tiny apple was
forming at the heart of each lovely blossom. At
last they cried, "The apples are set and ready to
grow. Our work is done. Now we can fly away."
|Away they flew on the spring breeze, dancing
and flitting here and there. They flew so thick
and fell so fast that they looked like snowflakes.
The ground became white where they lay. The
children, coming to the orchard to play, laughed.
|"See the summer snow!" they cried.|
|The petals were tired, but very happy. They
snuggled down in the cool grass and went to sleep.
